Dagenham is a town within the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
It was still a village in the early 1920s. That changed when the Becontree Estate was built. It was home to the Briggs Bodies car plant that went on to become the Ford Motor plant in 1931. In 2002, the Ford motor plant was downsized and now produces only engines and gearboxes. The singer Billy Ocean was once a production line worker at Dagenham’s Ford plant.
Barking is situated around the site of the ancient Barking Abbey, a nunnery founded by Bishop Eorcenwald of London in the seventh century. Famous natives of Barking include England’s World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore, and current England captain John Terry.
