One of England’s largest cities, Liverpool is situated in the North West, on the coast, sandwiched between North Wales and Lancashire.
It is famous most recently for football (being the home of England's most successful club team) and entertainment (it is the birthplace of the Beatles). Historically, however, it was one of the World’s foremost ports - at one stage one seventh of the entire World’s shipping was registered in Liverpool.
Thanks to its port, and to Britain’s involvement in the slave trade with the Americas, Liverpool was a rich city during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Manufacturing and food processing industries built up around the port. This has been in serious decline after the Second World War, due to extensive bombing by the Luftwaffe, and more importantly, the inability of large container ships to dock in the relatively narrow Mersey docks. This has been arrested slightly by the creation of Liverpool Freeport, six miles up the coast at Seaforth, where the Mersey meets the Irish sea.
